Fish compatibility charts.

The links on this page will lead to helpful and informative charts on different families of fish. The charts will contain text on any particular habit or behavior the fish exhibits as well as an icon highlighting the fish which should be good starter choices. Check it out I think you will find them very helpful. There is also a large article on good fish and bad fish for the novice, it contains lots of specific information on each fish. These pages are a little slow loading, but I think the information they contain makes them worth the wait.

Neon tetras
Fancy guppy

Dwarf Gourami
African cichlid

    Some notes on the charts:

  • Common name: This is the name usually used in the aquarium trade. Many species go by a number of common names. Use the scientific name as the final guide to identifying your fish.
  • Scientific name: All fish are assigned a two-part scientific name. As the relationships between species are revised, new scientific names are sometimes assigned. The scientific names used for each species were correct at the time of writing, but may not be the most current.
  • You can use the fishbase site ( to find the current valid scientific name of a species.
