Hi, I have a new 10 gallon tank. I have had the temp set at 78 degrees with the filter on and gravel with fake plants for around 6 days now and I think I'm ready to get some fish. This tank is in a child's room and I want some fish that are not too difficult in care. I've had lots of different advice but I'm not sure which way to go. One LFS suggested gouramis and another suggested tetras. Some other people have suggested guppies. I'm not sure which way to go but I'm leaning toward guppies because of their lack of aggressiveness. I just don't want babies all the time. What do you suggest? Thanks. Oh my water's natural ph is 7.0 if that helps.

I would suggest tetras (EXCEPT NEONS) if you dont want babies. Bleeding heart tetras are good, black skirt tetra, or even ZEBRA Danios. ALSO I would get some otto cats to eat algae.

I would start with EITHER 3 of the tetras OR 3 of the Zebras. After 2 weeks I would then get 3 or 4 otto's. Remember BUILD up SLOWLY, or your bio filter wont be ready for the build up of fish waste and it will either stress your fish or kill them.

Good answer Claude. I agree 100 percent. Good choice of fish, both for a beginning tank and a child's room.

Thanks Kick.....

I like to give back from the lessons I have learned being a beginner (and making mistakes) myself.

And I have had good teaches (you, Iboy, jeff and others). SEE I DO LISTEN ;)

I agree with Claude. Great suggestions...zebra danios are very active, and very hardy. Although, visually, I prefer the tetras that he mentioned.

I still have two African red eye tetra that are about five years old. They cycled my first tank and are very hardy fish.
